Four Ways To Take Advantage Of Hawaii Arts and Entertainment Fun

When it comes to local entertainment and cultural art, Hawaii definitely takes the cake. Traditional island entertainment will not disappoint. Island culture is alive and readily available to visiting guests. The following ideas will wet your whistle for a taste of island fun.

Enjoy the Waikiki signature activity of torch lighting. The tradition of the torch-lighting ceremony occurs every evening throughout Waikiki. Find a tiki torch around town and wait until dusk. Traditionally, an island native runs around and lights the torches. Some areas even have special ceremonies either before or after the tiki torch lighting.

Attend A Hawaiian Luau. When in Hawaii this is a must do! There are many Luau options on all the islands. As most of us know, there is the roasting of the pig. The pig is put atop burning coals and banana leaves. It is then covered in more banana leaves and wet burlap. A Luau is always held at sunset. At the end of your three-hour Luau you will have enjoyed Polynesian musical entertainment and tried many unfamiliar dishes. And who knows, you may have a new favorite dish!

Experience the local culture by taking in a Hula performance. Hawaiians’ believe that Hula is a sacred ritual. Every move and motion has meaning. When the dance was used for religious ceremonies, Hula was taught at specific schools with strict admission.

Due to missionary involvement Hula dancing was forbidden, but resurged in popularity in the 1970s. There are many and admission charged Hula shows on the islands. A hula show will give you the chance to experience authentic cultural history while learning a few new moves.

Hear the Royal Hawaiian Band. The Royal Hawaiian Band is one of the last links to the monarchy that once existed in Hawaii. The band travels extensively each year to countries around the world. While on the island, there are performances almost daily. Concerts last about an hour and most are free!

Hawaii is rich in cultural art and entertainment. Whether you visit a Luau or learn how to Hula, you will leave Hawaii with a greater understanding and appreciation of the history and culture called “Hawaii.”
